In a recent interview, Tim Willits, id Software designer since 1995, finally broke the silence surrounding the veil of secrecy around the multiplayer content to be found in the wildly anticipated PC FPS Doom III.
There had until now been an alarming silence around this aspect of the game, sparking rumour that Doom III would be single player only.
When asked directly if Doom III has multiplayer content, Willits said, “Yes, there will be basic multiplayer. We won’t have any breaking ground with this, it’s fully scalable, John (Carmack, id bigwig) said yesterday that it's just going to be four player but it really depends on the maps we make and the multiplayer style we develop. But we are still a long way from that, we’ve really been working on the single player mode of the game.”
Then, shattering the fantasies of the Doom fanbase, Willits stated, “We won’t have co-operative play, that’s definite. Once we get further into the multiplayer aspect we will explore voiceover IP options, but for now we don’t have plans for it. All we know is that it is gonna have death match, primarily because we are really structured in the single player experience, and that’s what we are really focusing on.”
So there it is. We’ll bring you everything on Doom III as we get it.
