Konami resurgent

Key titles power finances globally.

Konami of Japan is expected to smash its own financial projections for fiscal year ending April 2003 in a record-breaking year for the videogame veterans.

Already in 2002, the firm has seen record sales, selling over 3 million games at retail in the past six months and toppling Nintendo as the number one games firm in Japan.

It is widely expected that Konami is poised to announce that it will make a net profit of $68 million this financial year, powered largely by its ISS/PES/Winning Eleven football series, Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 2 and the rekindled success of Yu-Gi-Oh. It was thought at one point that over investment in the card battle game Yu-Gi-Oh would severely damage Konami’s balance sheet this year, but the brand has only gained in popularity.

In other news, Konami in the UK has revealed that Pro Evolution Soccer 2 will hit our shelves on October 25 this year. We’ll have to wait and see if Konami has the pulling power to outsell EA’s FIFA offering twice in a row.
