A new development kit has been created for GameCube that will finally see lengthy high quality video footage included in future titles for the Nintendo machine.
DivX Networks and Factor 5 have made it possible for developers to overcome the limited storage space offered by the GameCube’s bespoke optical discs.
Video files can be up to ten times smaller than is possible at present and will be of DVD quality. Furthermore, video is now able to be mapped onto any in-game surface at speeds of up to three times faster than real time.
“The DivX for GameCube SDK was designed to provide developers with a complete, easy-to-use solution based on the world's most powerful video compression technology," commented Thomas Engel, Director of Technology at Factor 5. "By partnering with DivXNetworks, we are able to offer game developers a toolset of cutting-edge video technology specifically optimised for creating the highest quality cinematics in Nintendo GameCube titles."
"We are pleased to work closely with the talented team at Factor 5 to develop the DivX for GameCube product," stated Darrius Thompson, director of research and development at DivXNetworks. "DivX is the perfect video compression technology for game developers and publishers seeking the highest visual quality, best compression and fastest encoding and decoding speed."
What this all means is that simply, for the first time, the GameCube will be able to compete on an even playing field with its DVD-powered peers in terms of video. And that surely is a good thing.
