Nintendo has made its most concrete statement to date on its flagging relationship with UK-based development studio Rare, from whence sprung GoldenEye, Banjo Kazooie, RC PRO-AM, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and the later Diddy and Donkey Kong games.
Nintendo of America’s Peter MacDougall made the following statement over the weekend at the Tokyo Game Show. “Nintendo had the ability to continue its exclusive relationship with Rare, but in looking at the company's recent track record, it became clear that its value to the future of Nintendo would be limited. In other words, we passed on this opportunity for very good business reasons. Although we declined the opportunity to continue our exclusive agreement with Rare, this announcement does not diminish our respect for their work or the past contributions they have made to Nintendo.”
And although this sounds a little harsh, MacDougall and Nintendo have a fair point. Rare has slumped in terms of quality and production activity since the last days of the SNES and dawning of the Nintendo 64.
As to whether Microsoft will pick up Rare remains to be seen, but expect clarification from X02 tomorrow.
