World Exclusive: Backlit GBA goes into testing!
We can reveal that a backlit Game Boy Advance hardware set has gone into testing at Nintendo Europe’s headquarters in Germany. Hardware consultants at the firm have taken receipt of several units and have begun an arduous testing process.

The tests are looking at compatibility with in-game colour schemes, variable contrasts and most importantly, battery life. Initial reports are suggesting that battery life has been a major issue, with Nintendo struggling to keep within the 10% battery loss it had specified as acceptable.

The backlit GBA, as yet unnamed, was initially targeted for a Christmas release in the US, something that now looks unlikely.

Other talk from our sources indicates that Nintendo may be looking at a £10 upgrade scheme for existing GBA owners, the details of which are still sketchy. Whether the new machines are the Game Boy Advance Gold and Silver models was not disclosed. For reference, Nintendo released Gold and Silver Game Boy Pocket units, known as the Game Boy Light, that were also backlit.

Nintendo simply said when approached today, “There is no announcement to be made about this at this point in time.”

Of course, we’ll keep you updated as this progresses.
