PlayStation 2 becomes PC/TV go-between cum set top box type thing
Fledgeling electronics firm BroadQ LLC has today announced the QCast Tuner today, a device that kinda turns your PlayStation 2 into a swanky multimedia jukebox. Should you want to.

The Qcast simply places your PlayStation 2 between your home PC and TV set and gives you control over all your media files. Acting much like a TV card on steroids, Qcast offers a visual interface that allows you to stream, arrange, control and play PC media files onto the telly through the PlayStation 2 joypad or remote control.

“There is a nearly infinite supply of digital content available today, and everyone agrees that the problem is how to make it available on the TV. Most solutions involve selling another piece of specialized equipment to the consumer," commented Stacy Cook, president and chief executive officer of BroadQ. "Today, there are over 13 million US homes with Sony PlayStation 2 consoles, and research indicates that 59% are connected to a television in the living or family room. By just adding water, or in this case QCast Tuner software, they have an instant digital home entertainment centre.”

At present the device supports all the usual suspects in the media file extension line-up including DivX, Mpeg, MP3, AVI and so on. Although the Qcast cannot browse the Internet, BroadQ promises continued development of the product after-market, with resulting free software download upgrades.
