Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced that it will be reducing the retail price of the PlayStation 2 in the US.
The new price point will be $199, the first reduction from the launch price of $299 the territory has ever seen.
In an unprecedented move, Sony has also reduced the price of many of its peripherals, including the DualShock 2 and the 8 MB Memory Card.
The company also hinted at a blanket reduction in the cost of PlayStation 2 games, though nothing was confirmed at this point.
"This way we can have some time so we can plan out the rest of the year with our retailers," Kaz Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, told Reuters.
The world is now poised to see what move Nintendo chooses to make. The Kyoto-based firm of more than 100 years standing stated recently that it would consider reducing the price of the GameCube if Sony took a chunk out of the PS2 asking price.
This now means that along with Microsoft’s move, all three consoles on the US market are priced at $199.
More as we get it.
