Police in Erfurt, Germany have been unnervingly quick to mention that Robert Steinhaeuser, the teenage gunman responsible for the murder of 16 people at his former school, enjoyed playing violent videogames.
Police Chief Rainer Grube said that Steinhaeuser played games that featured "intensive weapons usage.” Counter-Strike was specifically mentioned.
The fact that he was a weapons “enthusiast,” had been kicked out of school, and had no friends at all was also mentioned.
This comment made by Grube, in the wake of this latest tragedy, will doubtless fan the flames of legal action against games makers in the USA too. A consortium is in the process of appealing against a decision that stated that video games and the makers of such games are not responsible for the Columbine shootings in 2000.
