Nintendo of Europe has announced that it has slashed the European price point for the GameCube hardware unit, effective from its launch date of May 3 this year.
The machine will now cost a mere 199 Euros and will sell in the UK for the staggeringly low price of £129, an unprecedented price point for a new home console.
“Europe is a very important market for Nintendo and we are committed to making it a success. On May 3 we will launch the only dedicated games console, the Nintendo GameCube, with an excellent software line-up, both for launch and throughout 2002, at a very competitive price. This is a very strong offer for consumers and one that we believe will ensure Nintendo’s success across Europe,” said David Gosen, Managing Director, Nintendo Europe.
Nintendo also reaffirmed its commitment to make 500,000 GameCube units available for launch.
This news consolidates Europe’s position as the best place to be a gamer, at least as far as hardware pricing is concerned.
Sony is widely expected to announce its own global price cut for PlayStation 2 hardware at E3 next month, and is also expected to confirm that PSone production will cease.
