Racing against time and Oculus Rift, Sony announced its PS4 virtual reality headset at GDC in the USA last night our time. It's called Project Morpheus.Yes, Sony has named its headset after the god of dreams or that guy from
The Matrix. Of course, the announcement came without a price or release date, making is smell a wee bit like a spoiler against Rift. So, what details were there?
Well, it is a 1080p head-mounted display with a 5-inch LCD panel, 960xRGBx1080 resolution per eye and 90-degree field of view. Superbly for many people it can also be used by spectacle wearers.
TechRadar notes that in terms of sound: "Emphasizing that sound is just as important to VR immersion, Sony pointed to new 3D audio technology it has developed for Project Morpheus. Stereoscopic sounds occur in all directions and changes in real time depending on head orientation"
In terms of when you can get it, and how much? Well, this smells like spoiler too.
Gamasutra reports that:
"We’re coming out as soon as possible for as low as possible,” joked (Sony senior software engineer Anton) Mikhailov.
