The Internet is currently buzzing like an electronic hornets’ nest. Credible websites and trade magazine MCV are reporting that Rare are considering becoming a multi-platform developer.
Games Radar are suggesting that Activision have bought Rare. There’s even talk that Microsoft was in the running for purchase of the company. We’ve heard some silly talk before and this news is in the running for the top award. Activision outbid Microsoft? Come on!
Like most rumours, there’s probably some semblance of truth hidden deep within. We believe that Rare will develop games for other platforms, it’s just a matter of time. MCV states that Rare, Nintendo relations are strained due to the tardiness of StarFox Adventures for the GameCube and the adult content of Conker’s Bad Fur Day.
It’s perfectly reasonable that Rare would use Activision to publish their games for other formats. We contacted Activision and suggested this theory to them. Apparently it’s “hypothetically possible”, but it’s not company policy to comment on rumours. Ambiguous, but not a definite ‘no’. If Activision makes any kind of official comment, we’ll keep you updated.
The multi-platform rumours started last Christmas when Rare sent out a card with an Xbox-shaped present under the tree. Most regarded this as a joke, but now speculation would suggest a shift in Rare’s strategy.
This makes financial sense for the company: the larger the audience their games reach, the greater profit and growth. If it turns out to be true, this is fantastic news for gamers that only own a Xbox or PlayStation 2.
Naturally, any games that feature Nintendo characters would not appear on the PlayStation 2 or Xbox formats. We would love to see sequels to the excellent Blast Corps, Banjo-Tooie, and Perfect Dark games, irrespective of platform.
This is potentially a big blow for Nintendo. The real ammo for the current console war is exclusive titles. If Nintendo lost or shared Rare with other console manufacturers, it would surely have a detrimental effect.
Nintendo have a 49 percent stake in Rare, and have a tough decision in front of them. How much strain would it have on their relationship with Nintendo if this was true?
Only time will tell, but rest assured you’ll be the first to know, whatever happens.
