Imran Sarwar, producer at Rockstar North and GTA V's lead mission designer has cleared up some aspects of gameplay in the title which is due to rule the known world in September this year.GTA V introduces the option to customize vehicles. Obviously you'll be able to make visual changes such as the colour of the vehicle, but you'll also be able to make strategic changes to aid you in missions. Some of these strategic customization options include adding a roll-cage, fitting bullet proof tires and adding armour to your vehicle. Sarwar said "having armour on your car, a roll-cage; that will help you in the mission - your car essentially will be tougher so you can slug it out a bit longer".
Now, as well as customizing vehicles, we can also customize our weapons. This means you can add scopes or silencers as you would in a
Battlefield game, and use them to determine how you play a mission - quick and quiet or loud and explosive.
Rockstar has decided it's time to change how hand-to-hand combat works too. Rather than having to fight one guy at once in a static position, the hand-to-hand will apparently be more free-flowing, allowing you to seamlessly flow between enemies. When asked about melee combat, Imran said "hits are much more satisfying - you really feel the impact, the crunch"
Firefights are getting a rework as well (and no, we don't mean burning houses and fire engines) - the environment is going to be destructible, and the AI are going to be smarter. For instance, "S.W.A.T will be a lot more focused" and will attack you much more professionally than, for example, gang members. You'll find that they adapt to your play-style, or so says Sarwar.
Did you all see
the official gameplay trailer that was released earlier this week? Well, if you did, you'll already know that you can switch between the three main characters. According to Imran, you can use this to your advantage in most situations. For example,"the player can position the three characters the way they want" if you know there's a firefight coming your way. You can then switch between each character, and the idle two characters will carry on with whatever you left them doing - sounds useful huh?
Now, one of the most unexpected points that was discussed during the interview, is that each character has a 'special ability' - Trevor can effectively go into a 'rage' mode, in which he takes less damage and deals extra damage. Franklin can slow down time while in a vehicle to enhance his driving skills, and Michael can also slow down time, but in a combat situation, allowing him to pick off enemies without an array of bullets heading his way.
