While Microsoft has just announced a pre-release next-gen Kinect for Windows developer program, Xbox One's Kinect sensor won't work with PCs."The Kinect for Xbox One sensor will not have an adapter that allows it to plug into a computer," a Microsoft spokesperson told
Ars Technica. Rather, the Windows peripheral will connect to PCs using a standard USB3 port.
According to Microsoft the two versions of Kinect are "built on a shared set of technologies", including 1080p video with a wilder field of view than the 360 Kinect and an active IR mode. The two are being built and tested separately, however.
We've seen the 360's Kinect being used by hackers in conjunction with PCs, of course, and it's not unreasonable to assume that hardware hackers will come up with their own adapter. Still, Microsoft told Ars that Xbox One's Kinect "is not licensed for commercial use, supported, or under warranty when used on any other platform, including Windows."
