Offloading computing calculations to the cloud is not a feature exclusive to the Xbox One. According to Sony Worldwide Studios exec Shuhei Yoshida, the PlayStation 4 is capable of doing the exact same thing. The difference, of course, is that the feature is optional."Linking, matchmaking…there are already many computations being done on the cloud side. We don’t believe every title needs that," Yoshida revealed. "But if your title needs [an] online connection to provide some online features: Go for it."
Microsoft announced that its Xbox One will be taking advantage of cloud computations in order to make the console more powerful over time. As a result, the platform requires a persistent internet connection so that gamers get the benefit. On PS4, it seems that developers will have the opportunity to do the same, on a game by game basis.
Sony also revealed that the PS4's Gaikai technology will roll out in the US in 2014, and will offer instant streaming of PS3 titles as soon as the service launches.
