Whore of the Orient, the game being developed by former LA Noire devs at Kennedy Miller Mitchell, may be in trouble. While the company claims the game is not dead in the water, MCV
reports that the team working on it is out of a job. The report cites 'multiple sources' as having confirmed the layoffs.
In a statement to the publication, however, Doug Mitchell (the 'Mitchell' in the company's name) indicated that they see a future for the game while neither confirming nor denying the layoffs. "
Whore of the Orient is a unique and extraordinary story and game, and we are still actively pursuing the right investor to partner with," Mitchell said.
The game was/is a detective thriller set in the 1930s and will/would no doubt have featured a similar style to the late Team Bondi's
LA Noire. No publisher has been announced for the project and that, reading between the lines of Mitchell's statement, could be what KMM is looking for in order to continue development.
You might also note the phrasing "story and game" in Mitchell's statement. Given that KMM was a film and TV production company long before it dabbled in games, we might see elements of the project reworked into another medium.
