At the AUO Arcade expo taking place in Tokyo this week, Namco, Sega and Nintendo were eager to show off their TriForce hardware, a new arcade system based on GameCube technology, and developed by the three companies.
Though no announcement has yet been made as to which games will appear on the new machines, it has emerged that TriForce will not be a closed platform. Both Namco and Sega were showing the technology, but in two different forms. Namco was displaying the hardware mock-up on its own, whereas Sega was showing it with a Dreamcast-esque GD-ROM added to it.
It would appear that the specifications of the actual hardware can alter depending on which game it is set to support. This may be a way to enable arcade developers to be able to start work straight away, without having to be tied to platform specifics.
The hardware looks like some kind of GameCube offspring, as you would imagine, and is purple with various connectors in its sides. Ports capable of broadband communication are also present, fuelling rumours that TriForce heralds the onset of Nintendo’s online gaming push.
There should be some sort of announcement relating to software later this week, so stay tuned for more.
