Square, as ever true to its word, has made the promised “significant announcement” regarding the future of Final Fantasy XI, its debut MMORPG.

The game will be released into Japan on April 27 and will be free to use for the first two months. Then, like all successful pushers of anything addictive, Square will jack up the price to 500 yen per month.

The game will be both broadband and narrowband compatible, and interestingly, rumour suggests that the PlayStation 2 hard-drive may not be needed for full online access.

As ever, it seems that the Japanese are an entire instalment ahead of us westerners in the series, which is probably fair enough, considering they make the games.

Amazingly, rumour is escalating that in a joint venture with Sega, SquareSoft is planning to bring a pick-up-and-play version of FF XI to the arcades. Running on Namco’s PlayStation 2 compatible System 246 arcade board, game saves will be accessed via the memory card.
