In news that is perhaps indicative of the combined quiet January period and shaky retail landscape, Capcom has been forced to nearly halve its sales projections of Ninja Theory's Devil May Cry reboot. The Japanese publisher initially expected to ship some two million copies of the game to retail. That has now been revised downwards to 1.2 million copies. One million copies have reportedly been shipped already - suggesting that Capcom is not entirely confident with current sell-through numbers.
The game hit the #1 spot in the UK Video Game Chart during its launch week, but number crunchers Chart-Track revealed that the new Dante only managed to shift around a third of the units of
Devil May Cry 4's first week on sale in 2008. This is despite
DmC having an extra three days of sales. In Japan, Ninja Theory's effort sold less than half of
DMC4's launch week numbers.
The figures in Capcom's report do not include sales or shipments of the PC version, but it's probably safe to say that the publisher was expecting the bulk of its success to come from the console market. A real shame -
we absolutely loved DmC and gave it 9/10.
