Shigeru Miyamoto: Why Do You Want F-Zero?
Think of a Nintendo franchise that you want to see return. Was the answer F-Zero? Of course it was. Now you've just succeeded in surprising Shigeru Miyamoto, too. Good job!

The Nintendo exec isn't really sure why everyone wants a return of Captain Falcon and co, you see. In an interview with French site Gamekult, he seemed taken aback when he learned that F-Zero topped a list of games that site users missed the most.

"I am extremely pleased to hear from Twitter about this, because since the first F-Zero game on Super Nintendo there have been several sequels but I don’t think the series changed much," Miyamoto explained.

"On the contrary, I thought people were tired of it. So, I want to say thank you very much for your patience and suggest you try the F-Zero mini-game in Nintendo Land. I’m also very curious and would like to ask these people: why F-Zero? What do you want from this series that we haven’t done already?"

Well, besides an online multiplayer, HD graphics and potential GamePad features? Isn't that reason enough, Miyamoto-san? Miyamoto-saaaaan!? Oh, and get SEGA to do it again, maybe? F-Zero GX was arguably the best in the series.

I wonder where Miyamoto got this information? Surely doing surveys like this is the definitive way to find out the answer; hopefully he hasn't been making assumptions as to what games people like :P

@realvictory Given the over saturation of Mario games, I think he has.

@realvictory The answer to your question boils down to some common business sense.

Miyamoto has a disproportionate amount of influence on the decisions Nintendo makes as a company, and so do shareholders. I am certain that in the eyes of Miyamoto and shareholders, people vote for the games they like using their money, not by posting on internet forums. New Super Mario Bros. titles continue to sell very well across the globe, so Miyamoto believes that people aren't tired of the franchise -- even while many gamers and critics believe it has gone stale. Likewise, although F-Zero GX continues to earn well-deserved praise, it performed very poorly in sales -- hence why Miyamoto is surprised that anyone wants a new F-Zero title. He interprets sales as a barometer of interest in a given game or franchise.
