Sony Finances - Games Down But Losses Change to Not Losses
Sony's second financial quarter results are in - these are the figures for the three months to September 30th 2012. In words a that will be understood by much of the Internet: Sad Panda Face is Sad. Also, the Game profit centre is a loss.

Facts: "Sales were 1,604.7 billion yen (20,573 million U.S. dollars), an increase of 1.9% compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year". Why?

"This increase was primarily due to a significant increase in sales in the MP&C segment..." in the what? In the Game, Mobile Products & Communications (“MP&C”) segment that's what. So, that's good for PlayStation surely? Not so much.

"The increase in MP&C segment sales was primarily due to the impact of the consolidation of Sony Mobile Communications AB (“Sony Mobile,” formerly known as Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (“Sony Ericsson”)) as a wholly-owned subsidiary from February 2012."

So, how about games? Again, some facts:

"Sales decreased 15.8% year-on-year (a 14% decrease on a constant currency basis) to 148.2 billion yen (1,899 million U.S. dollars). This decrease was primarily due to lower sales of hardware and software of the PlayStation®3 (“PS3”) and PSP® (PlayStation Portable) (“PSP”), partially offset by the contribution of the PlayStation®Vita (“PS Vita”) introduced in December 2011.

"Operating income decreased 0.7 billion yen year-on-year to 2.3 billion yen (29 million U.S. dollars). This decrease was due to the impact of the above-mentioned decrease in sales, as well as unfavorable foreign exchange rates, partially offset by a decrease in selling, general and administrative expenses."

A big, fat, "Ouch!" and the sad panda becomes sadder. Still, the pre-pre-Xmas quarter is often not great for games.

All of this, however, provides: "Operating income of 30.3 billion yen (388 million U.S. dollars)... compared to an operating loss of 1.6 billion yen in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year."

So, there some good news there.
