There's no escaping it - the fact is that the mobile gaming era is well and truly upon us. While the speedy transition has taken many by surprise - particularly traditional games publishers and studios - there's one company who saw this all coming from a mile away. That is Japanese social network outfit GREE.In an interview with SPOnG at Gamescom GREE's UK VP of developer relations, Kyoko Matsushita, explained that the company achieved success in its Japan after its first mobile game - released in 2007 - grew popular. When asked if the Japanese preference to play games on handhelds had a part to play in that success, Matsushita replied, "I think so, definitely. But we knew that the mobile gaming era was coming.
"Our business originally started in online games, but only for a short time back in 2004 when our CEO started the business... GREE was one of the first companies to adapt [to mobile gaming] before anybody else at that time. Now, the mobile gaming market is here, and we already have successful content as a result."
The company has begun its global strategy in earnest, with North American operations that started in late 2011 and a European business that's about to hit first gear. It is currently preparing to launch its own studio in the UK, and aims to have around 100 people working within it in a few months' time.
