Like an embarrassing parent dancing at a wedding, Nintendo’s board must cringe whenever Mr Yamauchi, the company’s overlord, gets a chance to speak in the press. In an interview with Japanese newspaper Shimbun, the old man of gaming has been shooting his mouth off again.
In a comment that must have greatly pleased the company’s investors, Yamauchi said "There are only two games that are going to become million-sellers on the Gamecube: Pikmin and Super Smash Brothers Melee. Why? Because power and reality are goals for so many creators, there is a flood of similar games on the market. But are realism and fun the same thing?" Oops!
Yamauchi was again keen to rubbish the chances of Xbox success in his own backyard. “I don't think Xbox will sell in Japan...the PS2's price cut does not seem to have been effective,” hinting that the GameCube might become a serious contender to break Sony’s stranglehold on the market.
On Nintendo’s future he made an interesting comment. "I would have wanted to have retired two years ago or more, but Nintendo will not be run by one man in the future. There must be a group system to guide the company." Does this mean that he doesn’t think the likes of Iwata or Miyamoto have the capabilities to run Nintendo?
