Criterion Games' executive producer Matt Webster has said that his studio will be "smashing convention" in Need for Speed: Most Wanted, by allowing players to take control of any and every car available in the game from the very start and to offer cross-platform data.

A new feature called CloudCompete will also allow players to share important game data, such as levels and skill points, across multiple platforms. A game that you start on your PlayStation 3 could be continued on your mate's Xbox 360 copy, then leveled up further on the train using your iPhone.

The studio has also worked in added navigation and social networking features into the game, making it easier to connect with friends and see leaderboards for particular races. You can also crash through billboards featuring your mates' faces to rub their virtual noses in your record.

It's all part of an aim to "shake up the series and breathe new life into genre". It's certainly looking the part - we'll see if he's right on 1st November.
