Nintendo Posts Q1 Loss as Wii and DS Sales Plummet
Nintendo has just posted its financial results for its first quarter ended June 30, recording a net loss of ¥17.2 billion (around £142m). However, the number is an improvement on the same period last year, where the company suffered a stinging loss of ¥25.5 billion. So chin up, Nintendo. You doin' alright. Sorta.

One of the reasons behind the improvement has to do with the fact that Nintendo 3DS hardware sales increased by 162% year-on-year globally, while software sales for the handheld rose 63% in the same period.

In terms of sales figures, that amounts to 1.86 million 3DS consoles and 7.39 million units of 3DS software sold. Nintendo sold 710,000 3DS consoles in the same period last year.

Nintendo also announced that as of today, it was no longer selling the stereoscopic device below manufacturing costs.

But it's not out of the woods yet. Net sales for the period dropped from ¥93.9 million last year to ¥84.8 million this quarter. While the 3DS gained, the Wii and DS fell - 710,000 Wii consoles were sold compared to 1.56 million last year, while DS hardware sales came to 540,000 units (down from 1.44 million).

Nintendo expects to sell 18.5 million 3DS consoles, 10.5 Wii consoles and 2.5 million DS consoles during the full fiscal year, ending next March.
