A survey carried out by Famitsu magazine in Japan has shown some startling results regarding the first impression of Square’s first MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI, currently in its beta-testing phase.
The ominous question “What do you think of Final Fantasy XI?” was put to thousands of Japanese videogame dealers. The results were quite surprising.
35% of those questioned said they thought the game would be a hit, comparable with other FF releases of late. 4% said they were unsure and there was no way to tell. An amazing 61% said that they didn’t think the game would succeed. Reasons such as the high price of the PS2 online/hard drive bundle and the failure of online Dreamcast gaming were given for this scepticism.
Famitsu readers replied in a similarly shocking way. Only 18% said they would play the game whatever, 30% said they would wait and see, and a colossal 52% said that they would not play Final Fantasy XI under any circumstances.
Whether these disappointing (for Square at least) figures will be reflected in the game’s sell-through remains to be seen. For the record, Square’s last offering, Final Fantasy X, was the best selling game in Japan last year, shifting 2,410,768 copies.
