Sony Computer Entertainment has proudly announced that it managed to shift a whopping five million PlayStation 2 consoles across the world over the festive period.
Diligently avoiding shortages by upping production and distribution facilities, the now somewhat aged Sony machine outsold competition with ease. Sales in Europe topped hit 1.68 million. Japan bought 1.1 million and the US shelled out for 2.5 million machines.
As was widely predicted, Microsoft and Nintendo are scrabbling for the crumbs that fall from Sony’s well-stocked table. As the PlayStation 2 enters middle age, it will be interesting to see if this industry stranglehold can be maintained or, as the PS2 falls behind the others in terms of power, a new console will be unleashed by SCE.
