Nintendo 3DS XL Announced for July 28 Launch
Apparently, what you all wanted in your 3DS was a larger screen, not a smaller form factor or a second Circle Pad. Nintendo has heard this, and announced this morning that it will be launching a 3DS XL handheld, complete with great big hoofing screens, on July 28th.

Just how big are these screens? Well, the top screen is 4.88 inches, and the bottom touch screen is 4.18 inches. Compare that to the original 3DS sizes of 3.53 inches and 3.02 inches respectively, and you're looking at about a 90 per cent increase.

The console is roughly 46 per cent larger than its predecessor too. It's also heavier, weighing in at 336g. But, for its size, it also packs in a bigger battery, offering between 3.5 to 6.5 hours for 3DS software and 6 to 10 hours on DS software.

In a bizarre announcement, the 3DS XL will come with a larger SD card (4GB to the 3DS' 2GB) but to save on cost the new handheld will not come packed with an AC adaptor. You'll have to buy that one separately. Or, you can use a 3DS or DS charger instead if you want to save money.

The charging cradle (which comes bundled with an AC adaptor) will also be sold separately. Nintendo will apparently make sure that there will be enough of these on store shelves to purchase, should customers need them.

You'll be able to pick up the 3DS XL in either Silver, Red or Blue when it launches.

How is going from 3.53 inches to 4.88 inches a 90% increase? The increase itself is 1.35 inches, which is 38.25% of the original 3.53 inches. If the increase was 90%, the top screen would be 6.707 inches.

For the bottom screen, the increase is only 38.41% of the original's size. Even if you (incorrectly) added the two percentages together, you'd still only get 76.66%.
