Kingdoms of Amalur - which we thought was, you know, okay - was developed by 38 Studios, based in Rhode Island, and now apparently totally unable to pay staff or State government. The 'based in Rhode Island' bit is important for two reasons: firstly, that's the state that is owed money. Secondly that was the state that made a huge deal about getting the former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling to bring his company away from Massachusetts.
The Boston Globe is scathing is its summing up of that deal, saying: "“This is a risk worth taking,’’ said (Rhode Island Governor Donald) Carcieri, a Republican, announcing the 2010 deal that lured Schilling’s company, 38 Studios, to Providence, and put Rhode Island taxpayers on the hook for up to $75 million in guaranteed loans to an athlete who liked video games but had never developed one."
So, what's happened to the
Kingdoms of Amalur developer? "After missing a $1.1 million payment May 1 and a personal plea from Schilling for more public assistance this week, 38 Studios has said it does not not have enough money to pay its employees."
Ouch.
