Report: Ubisoft's F2P Focus for Next Gen Consoles
Ubisoft could be making a big push for the free-to-play sector in the next generation of consoles, with the publisher believing that it will be a "central focus" of the upcoming battle between the next Xbox, PlayStation 4 and Wii U. At least, that's according to a report on MCV.

Apparent comments were made during Ubi's recent post-financials conference call. The report cites, but does not quote, representatives revealing that "full game digital downloads and... free-to-play titles will form a central focus of the generation ahead."

We definitely know that Ubisoft is dipping its toe into the console free-to-play market with Ghost Recon Online, set for release on the Wii U. The report would suggest that the publisher has more projects in development that follow a similar approach. If this supposed free-to-play-heavy gamble pays off, it could help propel a Nintendo platform to the top of the console league tables for a second generation in a row.

That is, of course, if free-to-play titles don't appear on competing platforms - which is something that is also a possibility, according to quoted Baird Equity Research analyst Colin Sebastian. "We believe that F2P versions of Wii-U titles are in UbiSoft's plans for the coming year. It appears that new consoles from Microsoft and Sony will also allow more integration of item-based transactions within games, including a free-to-play option similar to the model used in social and mobile games."
