Final Fantasy XI to be subscription free

New model for online gaming looms?

Posted by Staff
As SquareSoft gears up for the release of its first MMORPG Final Fantasy XI, reports are merging that the Japanese giant may not be totally committed to a pay-to-play business model.

According to reports from the PlayOnline launch party, Square president Yoichi Wada stated that there would be no immediate monthly fee payable to access the PlayOnline network.

The thinking behind this is that the lack of a repeating fee will lead to greater software sales figures, possibly at a higher price. If this is true, Square seem to have missed the point somewhat. What is the point in having a user base so dedicated that it would happily sell organs en-masse to play the latest Final Fantasy game, if it is not fully exploited?

As soon as SquareSoft Europe manages to break its current vow of silence on all subjects, we will find out what is going on and you will be the first to know.
