Despite 10,000 Lay-Offs Sony is Sticking with PlayStation Gaming

The great restructure begins for Kaz Hirai and his team

Sony's new president and CEO Kaz Hirai has a huge, huge job on his hands if he wants to bring Sony back from its current, loss-making state. Thankfully, it seems that gaming is going to play a big part in this recovery though.

The company's latest public statements regarding its restructuring includes details of lay-offs:

"As a result of these measures, Sony estimates that the headcount across the entire Sony Group will be reduced by approximately 10,000 in FY12."

But it also mentions gaming, in a very good way:

"Game - In the game business, Sony continues to deliver exhilarating entertainment experiences through PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and its unique combination of hardware, software, PlayStation Network ("PSN"), and range of accessories and peripherals. These will form the foundations on which Sony will target further sales and profit expansion in the game business.

"The Company also aims to increase sales by enriching its catalogue of downloadable game titles and subscription services available through the PSN platform, and also by expanding the lineup of PlayStationŽSuite compatible devices and content. Sony will target game business sales of one trillion yen and operating income margin of 8% by FY14."

Fingers crossed that this jolting wake-up call means better things to come for gamers and Sony staff.

As i read it here: 10K workers to get pink slips in Sony layoffs, the reason for the huge lay off is the enormous losses of the company. I realized that no one is exempted in recessions hard hit.
