UK Games Industry to get Tax Breaks
The British government has revealed as part of its Budget that the UK games industry is set to receive tax breaks.

The government plans to bring in corporation tax reliefs for the industry from April 2013. The relief will benefit the games, animation and high-end television industries. This is all part of the govenrment's stated plan to make Britain "the technology hub of Europe."

The Budget report does not give further details of figures or exactly what form the relief will take.

Richard Wilson, head of UK industry body Tiga, was suitably enthused about the move. "This is a brilliant decision by the government and terrific news for the UK video games industry. It is also a decisive victory won by Tiga through audacity, determination and endurance.

"Like a boxer knocked down by his opponent, we refused to accept defeat and kept getting back in the ring. This victory will benefit not just the UK games development and digital publishing sector but also the wider UK economy."

Wilson told the BBC that the move should generate £188m in investment by games companies, increase the games industry's contribution to GDP by £283m and bring in £172m for the treasury.
