Sony Crackdown on chipping machines continues – Full Reactions Inside
As we reported some days ago, Sony Computer Entertainment has begun to crackdown on companies that develop, distribute and sell devices that enable the PlayStation 2 to play CD-R, DVD-R and multi-region games and films.

The latest company to incur the wrath of SCE is playstationmods.com, a company that supplies the all-purpose cracking chip NEO4. The company has ceased trading in the chips and said "Due to recent legal proceedings by Sony towards our sale of the NEO4 chip, we have decided to close down all our modchip operations indefinitely. At the end of the day we work hard on our main games and repairs businesses and it is simply not worth jeopardising our staff’s futures just to do modchips."

The first company to be targeted by Sony was Wales-based ChannelTechnology, the developer of the infamous Messiah chip, another chip that enables the PS2 to play media from any region, including films, with no disc-swap needed. The firm is a little less easily persuaded than playstationmods.com. "If the owner tried to boot this 'where necessary' back-up on an un-modified console, would the 'restrictions' imposed by the console actually be denying him of a legal right?" This is the company’s official standpoint and believes that Sony could be of an opinion that is contrary to UK law if it attempts to force these companies to cease trading.
