Supermarket chain Asda has announced that it will have 'Midnight Openings' to sell Mass Effect 3 this very midnight with 200 shops making the game available around the country.

We don't hate to be picky when we point out that large numbers of margin-crunching, and indie-store melting Asda outlets are already open 24 hours a day anyway. However, we'd also be foolish to our readers not to point out that the retail giant is selling ME3 for £37.97 at 00:01am tomorrow morning.

The RRP for the title is £49.99 - and we're in the middle of the worst economic recession since dinosaurs roamed the Stock Exchange. Asda is also, of course, filling the gap left by GAME and GameStation.

Andrew Thompson, Head of Games at Asda points out that , "We are not only stocking the game nine hours ahead of other retailers but we’ll also be selling it for the competitive price of £37.97. With stock not as widely spread for this big release, Asda really is the top destination for games enthusiasts this Friday and for future releases.”

Read that again. Sure, it's Press Released quote-a-fodder, but it also heralds the very probable destruction of the kind of specialist High Street games retail that enabled non-AAA titles to get into the public mind via knowledgeable and enthusiastic retailers.

Yes, the kind of people you could once have found in GameStation or your own local indie (when it was an indie).
