David Braben, the legendary co-developer of seminal space trading game Elite, has confirmed that there is a Game Boy Advance sequel in the works, ending a decade of rumour and argument.
Following Elite coming high on a poll that asked punters which classic game from the past they would like to see resurrected for GBA, Braben made some amazing statements.
"I'm pleased to see yet another demonstration of the strength of support that Elite and its sequels still enjoy amongst the game-playing community,” he said. “In fact we have been planning some form of Elite sequel for Game Boy Advance for a while now. We are just about ready to open talks with publishers about it, so unfortunately I'm not in a position to reveal any more details at this stage. We are very familiar here at Frontier Developments with the Game Boy Advance architecture, and are confident we can produce a new game that captures the appeal of Elite for today's mass audience whilst remaining true to both our track-record of innovation and the spirit of the original games."
How cool is that!?
This follows rumblings hinting that Ian Bell, the co-developer of the original Elite title, recently sold the rights to the game to an undisclosed third-party. Braben tells us, “Elite was written as joint copyright by Ian Bell and myself. I would like to make [emulated versions of the original] Elite available as shareware, but this requires permission of the other copyright holder. A third party has claimed that Ian Bell has sold his rights in Elite to them but Ian has not yet confirmed this.”
We will bring you full updates on this incredible story as it happens.
