Nintendo's got a pretty good reason to celebrate on the week of PlayStation Vita's European launch - its competing stereoscopic handheld, the 3DS, has passed the five million sales mark in Japan. The figure comes from Media Create, and is actual sell-through, rather than units shipped. It did so in record time as well, a mere 52 weeks after the console's release. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo also lays claim to the previous two record holders as well - the DS topped five million unit sales in 56 weeks, and the Game Boy Advance before that in 58 weeks.
A milestone like that has got to put the willies up Sony in Japan at least, where the Vita was launched to a huge fanfare but has reportedly been struggling to stay on top of the hardware sales chart since its first week on sale.
