Cast your eyes over these visions of arcade beauty of Soul Calibur 2. They are an early indication of the lushness that is the hotly-anticipated GameCube conversion. Highlighted in this batch of screens is a new character named Xianghua, a vicious and competent female martial artist.
Soul Calibur 2, from industry veterans Namco, is a 3D fighter with a heavy emphasis on both gameplay and design. Similar to Tekken and Virtua Fighter, but with the inclusion of weapons and a rhythm orientated combo system. Soul Calibur 2 combines fast paced beat-em-up goodness with tactical play.
The parrying system remains intact from last time around, and is more crucial to advanced levels of play than ever before. Untimely parrying renders your character’s defence vulnerable, but successful parrying deflects incoming attacks and unbalances your opponent. The 8-way run system, suited to analogue play, makes a return, as does the ‘ring out’ system.
The arcade version is almost ready for international release, and with the similarities between the home and arcade hardware architecture, the GameCube version should be on shelves hopefully in time for the European launch in March 2002.
