Polish developer Techland has got its swagger on this Christmas, as it has declared that Dead Island has taken the title of best-selling new IP for 2011. It has also gone on record to say that the game is the best-selling Polish-developed game ever made."In this year there weren't a lot of big, new IP in games," Techland's PR Tomasz Gawlikowski told
giernik.pl (via
Eurogamer). "In the Autumn there was
Dead Island and
Rage. I don't remember any other new franchise, but there were a lot of big sequels. And
Dead Island sold very, very well.
Although three million units of the game were shipped, Gawlikowski was apprehensive on numbers actually sold. He still said with confidence, "I don't have accurate data but I think that we probably made the best-selling new IP in year 2011. Also
Dead Island is the best-selling game in history of Polish game development."
Dead Island stormed the UK charts in September, knocking
Deus Ex: Human Revolution off the top spot. Such success was largely thanks to a teaser trailer that went viral and sent the whole gaming world into a controversial tizzy.
