The UK All Formats, all prices, all-comers video games chart by Gfk Charttrack is in and, despite an 87% drop in sales since last week, Modern Warfare 3 remains at #1, so we're going to concentrate on the battle for second place between the much lauded The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from Bethesda and Zenimax and the slightly less loved Assassin’s Creed: Revelations from Ubisoft instead.According to Charttrack, not only does
Assassin’s Creed: Revelations enter the chart at #2, it's first week sales are also 4% up on that of that of its predecessor
AC: Brotherhood.
Chart-Track also mentions that, "It is also the first Assassin (game) to stealthily arrive as a Tuesday release and around 61% of sales during week 1 were completed in the first 24 hours."
Now, much the surprise of the massive amounts of media coverage in Sunday broadsheet newspapers and even TV, and the good reviews, and the huge number of Wiis in the possession of real people
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword only came in a #7.
Yes, with all the marketing and 'install-base' hardware in the world, a frankly hugely critically well-received new title on Wii was still beaten by
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, a re-build of an old Xbox game.
Makes you think... about critics, marketing, and sales.
Aside from this, Chart-Track points out that,
"It’s a new release bonanza with nine new titles in the Top 40 and 5 of those within the Top 10..."
With new entries including, "THQ’s
Saints Row: The Third (its week 1 sales) for the 360/PS3 versions are an impressive 43% higher than previous best, ‘
Saints Row 2’ from back in week 42, 2008."
