Battlefield 3, which runs on the new Frostbite 2 engine built by DICE, could allow for easy porting to the much rumoured Next Generation of consoles.During an interview with Eurogamer, Executive Producer of EA/DICE Patrick Bach explained that the Frostbite 2 engine was designed to future-proof the studio, and how it offered gamers a glimpse into the future of gaming.
When asked about the PC version of
Battlefield 3, Bach explains:
"If anyone would build a new console today, that [
Battlefield 3 on PC] would be the result... We could port the game to that console tomorrow... It's exciting. The whole Frostbite 2 thing has opened up a big landscape ahead of us so we can do whatever we want." Bach continues by explaining his vision of gaming's next generation, "The big step is to go from single processor to multi-processor. Single graphics card to multi-graphics card. To multi-memory. Do you do multiple memory pools or one memory pool?.. I would be surprised if there were something we couldn't do with the next-generation of consoles."
All this talk came after Electronic Arts president Frank Gibeau confirmed the company's intent on releasing a sequel to the popular series, not surprising considering
Battlefield 3 is EA's fastest selling game ever. Considering the rumours of Xbox Ten, the ease of porting games on Frostbite 2 to higher spec machines and the brand's extremely high sales, it is not outside the realm of reality to imagine
Battlefield 4 showing up on a next generation system.
