Sony has, according to reports, admitted that, "intruders staged a massive attempt to access user accounts on its PlayStation Network and other online entertainment services..." The attacks occured between October 7th and 10th leading to the suspension of 93,000 user accounts mostly in Europe and the USA.

According to the AP, "Credit card numbers linked to the compromised accounts are not at risk, Sony said. It has 'taken steps to mitigate the activity' and is investigating any wrongful use of the accounts themselves."

Sony itself issued a statement declaring that, "Less than one tenth of one percent" of its networked customers" have been effected.

AFP reports that, "The attempts took place between October 7 and 10 and succeeded in verifying valid sign-in IDs and passwords of about 93,000 accounts on its PlayStation Network, Sony Entertainment Network and Sony Online Entertainment services."

Sony stated that, the attacks, "appear to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or sources... unauthorised attempts to verify valid user accounts on our services using very large sets of sign-in IDs and passwords."

The company has carried out follow-up checks, stating that, "Only a small fraction of these 93,000 accounts showed additional activity prior to being locked. We are continuing to investigate the extent of unauthorised activity on any of these accounts."

A Sony spokesman called Sean Yoneda pointed out that, "What happened in April was a breach on our servers as we said in our announcements.

"But this time around, there was no intrusion on our servers. This was ... taking someone else's identity and trying to use that to access our services."
