The first-ever Mexican MTV Game Awards took place last night, and it was a curious event for all concerned. Call of Duty: Black Ops understandably took home the most prizes - including "Best Latino Participation in a Game" - but it was KillZone 3 that won the special "Game of the Year" award.
More than 375,000 gamers voted for their favourite nominees, in categories such as "Best Game for Sharing Your World" and "Best Game for Pulling the Trigger" - two awards that almost seem written specifically for the winners. Naturally, the accolades went to LittleBigPlanet 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops respectively.
Football is just as important to Mexican gamers as first person shooters, and that was no better proven than FIFA 11's hilariously dubious win in the "Classic of Classics" category. Linkin Park's "Blackout", which featured in EA's footy sim, grabbed the gong for "Best Song in a Game," proving that someone out there has no ears.
PlayStation Move title Sports Champions came out top in the "Best Game to Shake Your Body To" category, and footballer Lionel Messi was shown to have explosive feet as his performance in Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 won him "Best Weapon of Mass Destruction." For real? Three-year-old Aaron Martinez Rivera was voted the "Most Unexpected Player" in a category sponsored by Sony PlayStation.
We're not one to argue about the voting standards of the MTV Game Awards (hell, look at what some of us back at home vote for in the Golden Joystick Awards). But surely Mexican gamers can't have that much of a sheltered life to vote for KillZone 3 as the best game of the year. Maybe we're just old fuddy-duddies.
