After a difficult four and a half years in the UK market, the Nintendo 64 has finally seen the release of its last PAL game. Mario Party 3, released on November 16, was not only the last Nintendo-published title, but the last game the old console will ever see on UK shores.
It’s a shame, really. Despite bringing us Mario 64, Zelda 64 and various other 16-bit updates, Nintendo suffered financial turmoil when the industry went the way of CD-based gaming. Development costs, followed by lack of third-party support and overwhelming competition from Sony, eventually drove Nintendo 64 out of the market before its time.
A lesson learned for Nintendo, then, as the launch of GameCube saw Nintendo’s realisation of the viability of disc-based media, despite piracy fears.
All we can say is good luck with GameCube, Nintendo.
By the way, the mysteries of the GameCube’s chip-set have already been figured out, and can now be modified to play both US and Japanese games.
