You may not have heard of Ultraviolet but we have a feeling that you will do soon. It's a Sony-lead "locker service" that grants you access to the digital rights to view a content on a variety of devices including games consoles. At the moment, if you buy a physical or download copy of any film that is in the Ultraviolet system, you then have the ability to view it "on UltraViolet computers, tablets, game consoles, set top boxes, Blu-ray players, Internet TVs, smartphones and other mobile devices."
See where it says "games consoles"? That is important. Very important, in fact, because Sony has today announced its first Blu-ray releases using Ultraviolet.
The Smurfs and
Friends with Benefits will be released using Ultraviolet this December, surely paving the way for their games to use the system too.
It's not such a big leap to see games being introduced to the Ultraviolet system. With the potential of crossover between Vita and PS3 and systems such as Gaikai and OnLive already up and running, who's to say that we couldn't have something like
Uncharted 3 running on a variety of Ultraviolet branded devices before long?
As more and more companies push towards the easy access of cloud-based technology, the replacement of a huge variety of licences with a single digital key. Of course there's the flip side – what happens when you can't access your files – but let us not concentrate on that. This is the future! The future is always exciting!
