The Getaway - The Truth

Getaway details emerge as somewhat bizarre. Plus! Photograph/screenshot scandal explained at last – Exclusive!

We recently spent some time with a senior member of the development team of The Getaway, the high profile PlayStation 2 first-party title. We spoke about many things, not least the strange requests made by SCEA and SCEJ for inclusions in the game.

The team has been told that it must include a tourist mode in The Getaway that will let players simply walk around London. This will be completely free-roaming and fully interactive, and will see players looking at the pigeons in Trafalgar Square and generally killing time. There will also be tour buses that take players on routes that real tour buses follow. Strange stuff!

We were also the first people to hear all about what happened when the first “screenshots” of The Getaway were released. You may remember that Sony released some images that were touted as in-game last year. These images were quite obviously just renders and Sony withdrew them very quickly. Here’s what happened, straight from the horse’s mouth.

“What happened was, the marketing team approached our art department and requested some images that would demonstrate what the game would look like,” the senior member of The Getaway team told us. “It was in the early days of the PlayStation 2 and the general feeling was that anything was possible. The artists gave the images to marketing and they were published. Our side of the development team was not shown the shots until they went on general release. We all were just amazed that it had happened. The texture sizes used! Oh my God!”

We will soon have more time to speak with The Getaway team, probably around Christmas. There’ll be loads of exclusive stuff and a chance to actually appear in the game. Cool, huh!? Stay tuned for more soon!
