Ubisoft has announced that it will release a patch for the PC version of From Dust that will completely remove the included Digital Rights Management software. How nice! This about-face came after the publisher received a number of complaints from angry fans on its forum. The original intention was to only require online authentication the first time
From Dust was loaded. That quickly changed to its controversial "always-on" DRM, which demands a constant internet connection to be granted access to the game.
A
tail-between-legged forum post from Ubisoft reads, "We recognize that one of our posts in the
From Dust forum regarding the need for authentication in the game was not clear. We sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding.
"Our tech teams are working on a patch that should release in approximately two weeks that will eliminate the need for any online authentication. This development time is required as we are working to ensure that those who have already started the game, and who’s progress is currently saved on our servers, will receive and save their game information locally."
Was it really worth the effort?
