Todd Howard wants games to be like DVDs

Bethesda: We Need a Single Console Future
Rarely do you see a company man have such hatred for capitalism. Choice and the free market makes the world go round and all that. But Bethesda Softworks game director Todd Howard says to hell with choice, as he’s beating the drum for a one-console future.

An interview with PSM3 reveals that Howard would like there to just be one platform with which to make games for. “I'd like there to be only one platform. It's a lot of work to make the games look good on every platform you're on,” he said.

“I often equate it to DVD or Blu-Rays. Once I've bought a DVD I can use it in my TV, in my computer, in my car, here, whatever. And I think it would be good for gaming if it was like that,” Howard added.

As much as he’d like it to happen, though, he noted that platform holders make their money back on the launch of exclusive games - and that as a result would probably not be feeling positive about just spending billions of dollars building a box that plays generic discs.

Another former PC-only developer lamenting the different platforms when entering the console market. Anybody remember Valve being the same until E3 last year?

It's called a learning curve, if you're good enough, you'll get there, otherwise just stick to PC games. Either way stop bitching about it!

The problems are many i see...

1st who determines specs?
2nd who stops people paying a little bit more for better specs?
3rd do devs develop for minimum specs?
4th will a tecknika console be better than a panasonic console?
so on and on and on and on and on....

The the CD32!? Surely the 3DO would have been the ideal illustration!
