Sony's had a rough year with the Japanese earthquake and the PSN hack. So it's recent set of figures make interesting reading. Two things stand out though:On the upside is news out of PSN: "The network services that were shut down in April 2011 were restored in phases beginning in May, culminating in a full restoration on July 6 in all countries and regions where Sony provides the network services.
"Most recently, user logins to PlayStation Network in North America have returned to a similar level as before the cyber attacks."
On the downside, a slide in its earnings presentation shows that the company sold 1.8m PS3s in the quarter ending June 30th 2011. It sold 2.4million in the same period last year. That's 600,000 down.
The same slide (pictured) however shows that PSP sales were up from 1.2million to 1.8million in the quarter ending June 30th 2011.
In terms of cash money, Operating profit for Sony’s Consumer Products and Services division (where PlayStation lives) dropped to ¥1.7bn from ¥28.5bn. Sony blames lowered LCD TV and camcorder sales.
