Zombie Studios lead Jared Gerritzen has been responsible for an FPS or two himself (mainly Blacklight: Tango Down, check it here) is apparently appalled at the way Call of Duty in its many guises is milking money from fans while doing nothing new with the genre.Zombie is currently working on a version of
Blacklight, which will be free to play online under the tite
Blacklight: Retribution, which may colour Gerritzen's outburst to Gamasutra regarding the
Call of Duty Elite project.
"Right now, if they (Activision/Blizzard) could, they'd charge 60 bucks, then 20 bucks a month for a map pack, or even just one map, and then $9 to upload game movies to YouTube. They see this massive fan base, and why aren't they spending that money and evolving the game even more?"
He becomes slightly more placatory with, "They're amazing games," before really laying into Acti/Blizz's massively huge commercial success, "...but looking across the last four games, was there anything really new? That's the sad part. Think about if they tried to spend that money that they're trying to milk from the fans.
"It's sad. It's really weird. But there's always going to be that guy; there's always going to be the jerk."
At least Jared has an opinion that isn't simply, "We value the competition going forward, it makes us up our game."
