E3 2011: Nintendo design genius, Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that Super Mario Kart is being co-developed by Retro Studios, the outfit behind Nintendo's popular Metroid Prime series.
The Texas-based studio is responsible for working alongside Nintendo on the 3DS racer, and Miyamoto specifically mentioned that it will be creating some tracks for the game.
Nintendo has had a rather close relationship with Retro ever since it proved its worth with the original Metroid Prime on the Gamecube. Since then it has continued Samus' first person adventure into a trilogy, and been responsible for bringing Donkey Kong Country Returns to the Wii last year.
